Dear ,
The first Earth Day in 1970 had very significant support from the United Automobile Workers and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which included money, staff time, printing, and other related resources. Denis Hayes, organizer of the first Earth Day told Labor Network for Sustainability President Joe Uehlein that the first Earth Day would not have happened without labor support. Some of the larger Earth Day planning retreats/meetings were held at the UAW's Black Lake training center in upstate Michigan.
Amid the global pandemic and our attempts to stay safe with loved ones, alive on the job, and economically protected, LNS will honor Earth Day's 50th Anniversary next Wednesday, April 22, 2020. This is an important occasion we celebrate each year and we do not take lightly the interruption to our daily activities by these unprecedented events. That said, we stay committed to our mission of rising up for workers in an ongoing struggle for a climate-safe economy. We hope you will join us in solidarity with unions, organizations and coalitions who are taking their voices to digital platforms
Themed this year by EarthDay.org as "Climate Action," Earth Day 2020 provides us with a forum to persist in standing up for labor and climate justice. Earth Day to May Day campaigns are especially relevant to us as we consider the eight days leading up to May Day--the international day of labor.
Below are actions we encourage you to get involved with! If you have an action you'd like for us to list and lift up, please complete this form. |
